Describe an interest or hobby that you particularly enjoy:

1. What this interest or hobby is?

What do you think about the balance between the work and the leisure?
Well… that’s a difficult question for me because I have a lot of hobbies. I guess my biggest passion is for football, even though I am not very good at playing football myself. I love to watch games on TV, I watch the English Premier League avidly every weekend. I’m a huge fan of a small team called Southampton, although we’re not very good. I play football with my friends whenever I get a chance – it’s a habit I have had since I was in middle school. I’m not very good, so often I end up playing as a goalkeeper, because I don’t like running too much. Playing football not only refreshes my body and makes me mentally alert, but also ready and eager to engage in my day’s work. In addition, a reasonable amount of exercise prepares the body for a good night's sleep. I always sleep better after having played football. Also, it’s an excuse to meet up and hang out with my friends in a healthy way. In my country a lot of young people go out with their friends to a pub and drink and chat – this isn’t really my cup of tea.

Some people think that children should learn to compete, but others think that they should be taught to cooperate with others. What's your opinion?

This question is a central and controversial topic within the field of education. Many people have made plausible arguments in favour of and against competition.

Competition is a useful way of encouraging children to do things. Teachers often find that introducing a competitive aspect to their class increases motivation and therefore participation. Throughout time education systems have involved ranking of some kind – students have wanted to be the top student in the class, and this has helped students to strive for a better performance. However, this may be true for the best students in the class, but it’s also possible that it may de-motivate the weaker students in the class: they know they cannot compete with the best, so they don’t try.

Supporters of a competitive environment for children like to stress that competition is a ubiquitous aspect of our adult lives – from love to work, sport, and money – those who are able to strive under competition are well-equipped to be successful in life.

In recent years, many educationalists have questioned the importance of communication. Instead they have proposed that it is more important for children to learn to cooperate with others. Again, there is an intuitive attraction to this argument – cooperation is also an essential skill in our lives, most notably in love and friendship. There seems little doubt that cooperation is essential for those who are not very capable at doing something. Children need to cooperate to learn off of each other and build confidence.

In conclusion, both cooperation and competition are important aspects of our life. I would like to think that the two do not have to be exact opposites, and that there is value in children experiencing both.
